The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has allocated £421 million to local councils, which are responsible for distributing the funds based on their own eligibility criteria. The amount each household receives will vary depending on factors such as location and family size.
Some households have already received their payments, while others can expect to see the funds distributed throughout February. In certain areas, applications for the support are still open.
Payment Structure by Household Type
The support amounts may differ depending on local council guidelines. For example, in Wolverhampton, the council offers assistance as follows:
- Single-person households: £25 for food and £40 for energy, totaling £65.
- Couple households: £50 for food and £60 for energy, totaling £110.
- Families with children: An additional £15 per child across both categories, allowing a family with two children to receive up to £170.
The program aims to provide targeted financial aid tailored to specific household needs rather than generalized payments.
How to Apply for the Support Payment
Eligible residents need to contact their local council or housing provider to apply. In some cases, tenants of specific housing associations must apply through their landlord.
A council spokesperson clarified, “Housing organisations have access to the Household Support Fund and can assist tenants with their applications. If you are not a tenant of one of these organisations, please apply directly through the council’s website.”
Applicants will be required to provide:
- A valid Council Tax reference number.
- A recent bank statement from the past three months.
Once submitted, applications are typically reviewed within seven to ten working days. If additional information is required, applicants must respond within five days to avoid cancellation. Approved payments should arrive within another seven to ten working days.
