Pep Guardiola is set to make sweeping changes at Manchester City this summer, with Jack Grealish reportedly topping the list of up to eight senior stars who could be shown the exit door. The City boss is looking to rejuvenate his squad, shifting focus to a new generation of talent as the club aims to bounce back from a disappointing season.
Manchester City’s campaign has been far from smooth, with the team falling out of contention for the Premier League title and suffering an early Champions League exit after a crushing 6-3 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid. Guardiola, known for his ruthless approach, is now ready to part ways with several underperforming players to rebuild and refresh his squad.
Grealish, who joined City in a record-breaking £100 million move from Aston Villa in 2021, has struggled to secure a regular starting spot this season. The England international has made just six Premier League starts, raising questions about his future at the Etihad. At 28, Grealish is among a group of City players approaching the latter stages of their careers, with many of them set to turn 30 or older by the end of the year.
Alongside Grealish, the list of potential departures includes some of City’s most established names. Kevin De Bruyne, once the heartbeat of Guardiola’s midfield, has found himself relegated to the bench in recent months and has been linked with a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League. Bernardo Silva, John Stones, Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan, Ederson, and Kyle Walker are also rumored to be on the chopping block.
Walker, who joined AC Milan on loan in January after expressing his desire for a new challenge, is unlikely to return to City. His departure, along with the potential exits of other key players, signals the end of an era for Guardiola’s squad.
The club has already begun laying the groundwork for the future, bringing in four promising young talents during the January transfer window. Defenders Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis, midfielder Nico Gonzalez from FC Porto, and forward Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt have all joined the ranks. Additionally, City are reportedly closing in on deals for Lens defender Juma Bah and River Plate’s highly-rated midfielder Claudio Echeverri.
Looking ahead, Guardiola is also eyeing moves for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz and Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiasso as part of his long-term vision for the team.
