A senior Labour minister has issued a stark warning following Donald Trump’s shocking outburst against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, describing the global situation as “dangerous and uncharted waters.” Trade Minister Douglas Alexander condemned the US President’s behavior as “deeply troubling and sobering,” emphasizing that the only beneficiary of such division is Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During a televised meeting in the Oval Office, Trump launched a scathing attack on Zelensky, accusing him of “gambling with World War III” and declaring that Ukraine “does not hold the cards” to win the war without US support. The US President issued an ultimatum, demanding that Zelensky either “make a deal or we’re out,” effectively undermining ongoing peace efforts.
Alexander, who visited Kyiv in April 2022 shortly after Russia’s invasion, praised Zelensky as “probably the bravest political leader in Europe since Winston Churchill.” He highlighted the resilience of the Ukrainian people and warned that Trump’s actions risked fracturing Western unity, to Putin’s advantage.
“The only winner from the division of the West is going to be President Putin,” Alexander told the BBC. “We are in dangerous and uncharted waters this evening. The world we have known for the last 80 years has changed beyond recognition.”
The minister also expressed concerns over the US commitment to countering Russian aggression, noting that every US President since Truman and Eisenhower has stood firmly against Soviet expansion. He welcomed Zelensky’s upcoming visit to the UK and a meeting convened by Prime Minister Keir Starmer with 12 European leaders, stressing that “deeds, not words,” are now crucial in supporting Ukraine.
The fallout from Trump’s tirade has been met with dismay across Europe. Kaja Kallas, Vice President of the European Commission, declared that the “free world needs a new leader,” urging Europeans to step up and fill the leadership void. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Ambassador to the US Oksana Markarova was visibly emotional during the Oval Office exchange, holding back tears as Trump berated her president.
In Moscow, Trump’s outburst was met with glee. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, a close ally of Putin, gloated that Zelensky had been “slapped down” in the Oval Office, while Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova mocked the incident, suggesting it was a miracle US officials had restrained themselves from physically attacking Zelensky.
Zelensky, however, remained defiant, warning Trump that Putin’s promises of peace could not be trusted. He described the Russian leader as a “killer and a terrorist,” insisting there should be “no compromises with a killer.”
The incident has cast a shadow over hopes for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, with Trump’s erratic behavior further destabilizing an already volatile situation. As the world watches, the need for strong, united leadership has never been more urgent.
